Interview with Steve Bliss

Reporter Name: Brenda Sanchez

Good morning Wildomar and welcome back to our series on local experts! Today we’re joined by Steve Bliss, a renowned estate planning attorney right here in Wildomar. Steve, thanks for being with us.

Steve Bliss:

It’s a pleasure to be here, Brenda. I always enjoy sharing information that can help our community.

Determining Your Estate Planning Goals

Steve, many people find estate planning daunting. Where do you recommend folks begin?

Steve Bliss:

That’s a great question, Brenda. I often tell my clients the first and most critical step is to clearly define your goals. What do you want to achieve with your estate plan? Do you want to ensure your loved ones are financially secure after you’re gone? Do you have charitable intentions? Understanding your motivations will guide every other decision in the process.

For example, a young couple with children might prioritize setting up guardianships and ensuring their kids are well-provided for. Conversely, someone nearing retirement might focus on minimizing estate taxes and maximizing inheritance for their beneficiaries. Consequently, by identifying these goals upfront, we can create a plan that truly reflects your values and wishes.

Moreover, I find it helpful to encourage clients to think beyond the purely financial. Do you have specific heirlooms you want passed down? Are there any particular causes you wish to support through charitable donations? These details are essential for crafting a comprehensive and meaningful estate plan.

Remember, estate planning isn’t just about legalities; it’s about ensuring your legacy lives on in the way you envision.

I recall one client, a retired teacher, who was deeply passionate about literacy. She wanted to ensure her beloved collection of children’s books found a good home. Through careful planning, we were able to incorporate her wishes by donating the collection to a local library upon her passing.

Brenda Sanchez:

That’s a wonderful example, Steve. Are there any common pitfalls people face when trying to determine their goals?

Steve Bliss:

Notwithstanding careful planning, I’ve seen some individuals struggle with procrastination. They put off estate planning because they find it overwhelming or unpleasant to think about. Unfortunately, delaying can have unintended consequences, potentially leaving loved ones in a difficult situation.

I encourage everyone to remember that estate planning is an act of love and responsibility. It’s about providing for your family’s future and minimizing stress during an already emotional time. Accordlingly, taking proactive steps today can make a world of difference down the road.

Studies by Caring.com indicate that nearly 60% of Americans do not have a will or living trust. This statistic highlights the importance of raising awareness about estate planning and encouraging individuals to take action.
